Hair Loss

Hair loss can be the result of heredity, certain medications or an underlying medical condition. The medical term for hair loss is alopecia. The most common type of hair loss is pattern baldness which accounts for about 90 percent of hair loss cases. Male pattern hair loss is permanent and can usually be attributed to heredity.

There are drugs on the market which help to combat baldness. The two main ones are Rogaine and Propecia.

Rogaine works in your scalp to enlarge your hair follicles and stimulate hair regrowth. Individual results with Rogaine vary, although most men respond to its use. Chances are you will get better results if you have been losing hair for a shorter period of time or have little hair loss. Apply exactly 1 mL of Rogaine from the applicator, twice a day, every day. Using less or using it less often will simply lessen your chances of getting results. Conversely, using more or using it more often won't make it work any faster.
Propecia was approved by the FDA in 1997. Propecia is actually a smaller dosage of an existing drug called Proscar . Proscar is used to treat an enlarged prostate gland. Proscar stops hair thinning and hair loss and promotes hair growth in men with mild hair loss. Propecia is taken orally in pill form. It works by blocking the formation of a male hormone that contributes to hair loss. In clinical studies one or more sexual side effects included decreased libido and erectile dysfunction. However these side effects stopped when they discontinued using Propecia.
